SYRAHSyrah is a very young variety in Slovenia and its quality is still being discovered. In France, the variety has an important place among red varieties. The name Syrah originates from a town in Iran where documents relating to the variety date back to 60 years BC. Syrah is becoming one of the most popular red varieties world-wide. It gained its world repute primarily during the last decade when the countries when of the new world (= winemaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand, USA, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Canada etc. outside Western Europe) started mass plant the variety. The reputation of the Australian and Californian Syrahs has been spreading fast. The variety is also represented by other varieties, mainly by Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest of the Bordeaux varieties. The Syrah from our wine cellar is a premium wine from the selection vineyards of the Goriška Brda. The wine matured for 32 months - in large oak barrels made of the oak of Slavonia (a region in Croatia). The Syrah is of a dark ruby red colour with a subtle shade of coffee. Its aroma is of a herbaceous-spicy character, reminiscent of black pepper, mint and pine tree wood. With the underlying character of a complex aroma, the wine is nicely rounded off by a pleasing violet-scented aroma, a subtle fruity note of blueberry and plums, and the aroma of biscuit crust (vanilla and cocoa cream). In the mouth, the wine is full, smooth with an agreeable pungent note and pleasant warmth. The wine’s after-taste is slightly hot (agreeably pungent) with a distinct character and an enjoyable lingering silky finish. We can serve it with a broad assortment of spiced meat dishes. We recommend it with beefsteaks with green pepper, steaks with pepper and garlic sauce, fried liver with aniseed and mint in wine sauce, steaks à la Florentine and piquant mature cheeses.
