Wine tourismThe Goriška Brda is attractive all the year-round. In winter, you can become familiar with the culinary delights and wines of the region. In spring, the Brda is white and pink: the sight of blossoming cherry and peach trees is eye-catching and breath-taking: it catches your eyes and for a brief moment you become lost in your dreams. In summer, the Brda is a synonym for green vineyards, delicious fruit, long walks and so much more Autumn covers Brda with vibrant colours and brings grape harvesting; and soon, on St. Martin’s day, we can taste the pleasures of the wine, the result of year-long care and dedication.
Whenever you come to the Brda, its locals, Brike and Brici, will be only too glad to offer you a glass of wine and a snack. Coming from Gorenjska via Vršič
When you enter Primorska from Gorenjska via the Vršič mountain pass, the road will take you towards Bovec where you will discover the fort of Kluže situated above the 60-meter-deep gorge of the Koritnica River. This historic building is an extraordinary cultural monument of remarkable appearance. You will get acquainted with the remarkable past of the Soča Valley in the War Museum in Kobarid. The Museum is dedicated to the Isonzo (Soča) Front. In 1993, the Museum was declared the European museum of the year and since its opening in 1990 it has been visited by over 100,000 visitors from all over the world. Further on you will pass by Kanal ob Soči, and in Plave you will cross the “clear daughter of the mountains”, the emerald green Soča River, and start ascending to the paradise of wine devotees – the GORIŠKA BRDA. Continuing your journey to the village of Šmartno you will not be able to take your eyes off the innumerable hills painted by blossoming trees and vineyards. The name of the village was first mentioned in sources from the 14th century. At heart the image of a “fortified” settlement from the 16th century, enclosed in walls interrupted by seven towers, has been kept. Next to the parish church of St. Martin’s there is a bell tower which used to be a tower of the fortress. Your next stop is a place named after the oak, DOBROVO (Quercus robur is called dob in Slovenian) where the Wine Cellar Goriška Brda is located. If you go in the direction of Vipolže you will come to the House of Artists in Cerovo. Many renowned artists create and exhibit their works here. In Vipolže you can enjoy the scent of hundred-year-old cypresses surrounding a magnificent mansion dating back to the 17th century. The Teuffenbachs were the last in the line of its owners. You can pass by Medana, the native village of Alojz Gradnik and Ludvik Žoržut and visit the houses where they were born Coming from Nova Gorica If you come from Nova Gorica, the town of roses, and Solkan, the place with a thousand-year tradition, we recommend to you to visit the church of pilgrimage – the Basilica of the Assumption of Virgin Mary with over a 400-year tradition as the Basilica was consecrated by the first pilgrimage in 1544. Having enjoyed a beautiful panoramic view of Nova Gorica you will descend back into the valley and continue via the bridge of Solkan to the Goriška Brda, the land of wine. The road will lead you to the village Kojsko where you can have a look at the oldest altar in Slovenia. You will find it in the church of the Holy Cross (Sv. Križ). The Goriška Brda is at its best during the warm months of the year as this is the time of blossoming cherry trees which later on bear the best known fruit of the Goriška Brda. You will enjoy a fantastic view of the entire Brda region to the Slovenian sea and the Trieste Bay from the tower in Gonjače. In the north you will see Matajur, Krn, the majestic Triglav and the Italian Dolomites. While you are still enjoying the view over the picturesque region of the Brda region the road will take you to the Dobrovo Castle where the Gorica Museum exhibits a cultural and historic collection from the 19th century and you will also be able to see a permanent exhibition of 134 graphics by the world-wide known artist Zoran Mušič. Coming from the Vipava Valley When you travel through the Vipava Valley you can stop at Vipavski križ (the Vipava Cross) and visit the Capuchin monastery dating back to 1637 which Wand boasts an impressive library. The route which takes you across the man-made lake of Vogršček continues towards Nova Gorica. In the town of roses you can acquaint yourself with the passion of gambling in Perla, the biggest casino in Slovenia. Having seen this Little Las Vegas you can now treat your senses to the perfumed land of wine and orchards.
Coming from Postojna and the Karst
You can begin the south road to the Wine Cellar Goriška Brda by visiting the beauty of the Karst region – the Postojna Cave. It boasts a 20-km labyrinth of passages and tunnels, galleries and halls with fascinating riches of stalagmites and stalactites and a 180-year tradition of guided tours. After you have refreshed yourself in this miracle of nature you continue towards Štanjel and stop over in the MIP prosciutto production unit in the village of Kobjeglava. Here you can see the production of original Karst prosciutto and taste various kinds of quality meat. Then the road will lead you through the village of Branik where the Rihemberk Castle is worth visiting. After a thirty minute drive you will arrive at the youngest town in Slovenia –Nova Gorica. Here you can visit the Perla entertainment centre and get familiar with a host of gambling activities organised by the largest Slovenia casino company. Then you can be on your way towards Solkan and you cross the Isonzo (Soča) River over the bridge of the same name. On your right, you will be able to enjoy the view over a stone railway bridge. It was built in 1906 and at the time – owing to the clearance of 85m of its main arch – became the first among stone railway bridges in the world. After you have made the ascent below Sabotin, a fascinating hilly land, strewn with vineyards and orchards will come into view. Then you will be on your way towards your destination, the Wine Cellar Goriška Brda where we will be waiting for you to welcome you by offering you our hospitality. In our Wine Cellar you will be given the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the procedure of processing grapes to produce wines, from receiving and processing of grapes, maturing of wine in oak barrels, to bottling.
